What would the perfect small business CRM look like?

CRM as a category is tough for the small business because there will always be the balancing act of “too much or too little” and “return vs. upkeep.” CRM or at least tracking leads, nurturing leads and converting, reconverting and partnering with leads will always be a good thing. Once you more than about 10 such leads, keeping it all in you head, or in the head of a person that walks out into the street everyday, get dicey. And yet, looking for another CRM fix to cure your poor processes or cultural dysfunction can be more of a waste than a productivity gain.

I got a ton of response to this question and it really all came down to small business folks wanting something that was simple to use but helped them keep track of contacts and opportunities. Do you find this valuable?

The perfect CRM for small business would be:

1. Easy to use
2. Effective, with measurable results
3. Focused on the customer, not the sale

I run a small business, and up until recently it has been impossible to find a CRM that fits all three of these criteria. No CRM is perfect, but one that I am really satisfied with is a relatively new contender called Chili Sales. Like most small businesses, I don’t have a large marketing budget, but I use Chili Sales to easily send out personalized mass emails and to track each of my clients’ challenges, goals, and preferences. I log each interaction with clients, so I always remember the last conversation we had. It really makes the client feel important and valued. If you make your clients feel appreciated and satisfied, they’ll be your best advertising. That's really what a CRM is all about, isn't it?

The perfect [anything] depends on who the buyer is and their specific expectations. This is particularly true in the CRM market, where users might be hoping for a variety of outcomes:

- increased internal efficiency
- more sales
- better customer service levels

In our experience a typical small business evolves organically over time, from paper filing systems to Microsoft Office / Outlook, and then onto one of the many great web based or desktop CRM systems out there, like Salesforce or GoldMine. At Darwin we created our own CRM solution, as we felt that small businesses needed something really easy and familiar.

Ultimately the customer must have a really clear idea of what they want, which they should articulate into a document, then ask 3 CRM suppliers how their product will specifically help provide it.

kind regards

Ideal CRM for the small business to me would be ACT! that was account centric instead of contact centric. Do you find this valuable?
