As a genetics and virology researcher, I know how to write grant proposals to the NIH to get funding for research. I have never before attempted to round up $3,500 specifically for one trip to a teaching workshop. I have done many training trips within the USA and Canada, which are covered under the education and outreach part of our HIV Databases grant. However, the cost of this trip is excessive due to the long flight to South Africa, so I need to find a sponsor. The sponsor would get a bit of advertising on the workshop sponsor's page: http://www.rega.kuleuven.be/cev/workshop/index.php?id=14
I would prefer not to take money from a pharmaceutical company with interests in treating AIDS patients. Not that it would create any conflict of interest on my part, but because I am much more interested in prevention of new infections, through vaccines and behavior changes, than in treating people after they get infected. Anyway, if any of you have ideas, please share them with me.

HP. Is that Hewlett Pack(red)????
Small business success right there! They started much like Apple, building electronic calculators and such in a home shop, didn't they? Now they make more money selling printers than they ever dreamed of making with the ti55 hand-held calculator ( http://www.hpmuseum.org/ ).
It's midnight, and I woke up inspi(red) and not ti(red)!! I sort of "surfed" into these pages at the intersection of wetpaint and Hewlett Packard over the past 2 days. I have been fighting AIDS since 1995, and I am sad to say I was getting a bit ti(red). I need to make my second trip to Cape Town, South Africa, to train another group of AIDS researchers there about HIV vaccine design. I only need about $3,000 to get me there and back. I have South African friends who are fighting AIDS on many levels (HIV researchers, Treatement Action Campaign members, etc) who I can stay with to save hotel cost. I have been searching for funding for this trip without much success so far. It's a rather trivial amount of money to raise. Most biomedical granting agencies like the NIH take applications for budgets closer to $500,000, for bigger projects. Most other HIV/AIDS specific agencies want their money to go directly to AIDS orphans and such, rather than toward training doctors and nurses. But I have some ideas, thanks to this crossroads of HP and wetpaint!!! I can't wait to see if I can make it work!

We often get caught up in the whiz bang nature of the tools, products and services we offer, without stopping to think about what people really do with them.
Sometimes one of the smartest things you can do is take a tool and package it in new ways, with new names and uses - look no further than what they actually do, do with it and rename it that.
An alert Duct Tape Marketing reader pointed out a fine example from Amazon. Instead of a laser level and stud finder, this enterprising marketer is selling a “laser decorating kit.” Now I know people have used these tools as such since they were invented, but naming it made it unique and I suspect opened some sales doors.
What would stop you from packaging services and even processes in the same way?
Got any good examples to share?

What an interesting way to get people interested in reading! Book trailers are like movie trailers, but for books! You can find them all over the internet now, but here is a site that's featuring them on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/booktrailers

Hi- I'm brand new here. The last comment by makemoneyonline32 suggested to be useful. So, before I ask for help, I thought I'd tell you what I can help others with. I've got a PhD in neuropsychology and behavioral medicine, and was a professor of physiology and pharmacology at Georgetown U. I can offer free thoughts/consults on anything related to health, health care, medicine, staying well, avoiding bad medical advice, etc. Feel free to contact me. I now semi-retired, working as a holistic health practitioner. (with strong science base). I only do what works and makes sense.

I can't stress it enough...if you want to make money, and make money online, then make an effort to help others, especially the people who could help you. I can't count the number of people who come to me whining about not knowing how to make money online, and when I dig into their situation, it is their depressing "can't do it" attitude. Grab a lighter, burn that attitude, and then spend a creative moment thinking of what you can offer, and then go out and meet people who can help you, and offer them your skills and abilities. They will naturally come back to you and ask if there is something they can do for you.
It works like magic.

The question is: How is it applied correctly? If applied correctly, then programs we are marketing should grow like crazy but that hasn't been the case for me. Question: Has anyone out there developed any software that would help streamline the process?

Hey, thanks.
First step. Don't ask friends for advice. Ask the potential client. Most friends say, yeah, but that's been done. Potential clients will say if they think it's good...cause they have something to win by doing so.

What would the perfect small business CRM look like?

CRM as a category is tough for the small business because there will always be the balancing act of “too much or too little” and “return vs. upkeep.” CRM or at least tracking leads, nurturing leads and converting, reconverting and partnering with leads will always be a good thing. Once you more than about 10 such leads, keeping it all in you head, or in the head of a person that walks out into the street everyday, get dicey. And yet, looking for another CRM fix to cure your poor processes or cultural dysfunction can be more of a waste than a productivity gain.

I got a ton of response to this question and it really all came down to small business folks wanting something that was simple to use but helped them keep track of contacts and opportunities.

As a small business owner I've found that I can't be all things to all people. A small business owner must have the wisdom and the discipline to taget a certain segment of his market, and focus his marketing and sales efforts to selling that sement. It may initially require turning some business away because it is not a good fit. This is very difficult to do when just starting out. Most business owners will take any business initially. Of course, this also requires the vision to discern exactly who your ideal client is and how to focus your marketing efforts to drawing that group of individuals to your product or service. It all begins with an individual assessment of what your target market is. After that it's relatively easy to design a logo, develop a core marketing statement, mission statement and correlate all your marketing materials (brochures, business cards, letterhead, envelops, etc.) to covincing your particular target client that your product or service is best suited for them. I'd really be interested to hear some other opinions on this very important aspect of "growing" a small business.

I know you are getting tired of hearing about blogs as marketing tools, but they are still one of the best return on investments for a small business.
Here’s why: 1) It makes it very easy to update your web presence - easy is good because easy gets done 2) Locally you can use a blog to gain exposure that your competition can’t 3) Search engines love blogs (still) and will reward you with better search results when your prospects go looking 4) The daily and weekly chore (that may be how you initially view it) of producing written content will make you a much better communicator, marketer and salesperson - it’s the killer activity
