How to “Go Green” with your Business or Office
Anneliese Olson
November 12, 2007
I found another piece of content that I wanted to share with you. Here is a podcast interview with one of HP’s environmental stewards, Dave Lobato. He had a great conversation about what businesses are looking for when they go green and what tips he has for how offices can go green.
People have a lot of different levels of engagement on this topic. To me, it seems as though people and business owners fall into three camps:
1) Some people just don’t care about the environment that much
2) Some people are doing the basics like recycling paper and reusing plastic bottles
3) Some are including environmental issues as part of their business strategies for their company and their customers
This brings about a wide range of implementation options for “going green” in an office, but many people are not sure how to do it or where to start. Listening to Dave, he says that the two easiest areas to focus on are recycling and energy consumption. He also says that most businesses ask questions that fall into the following buckets:
1) How do I reduce the cost of going green?
2) How do I save resources (energy, trees/paper)?
3) How can HP help me in my business and help my customers?
So have a listen…if you’re just starting, you have a clean slate and can really design things from the ground up. If you have already established a business but would like to be more environmentally friendly, you have to look at process improvements and/or new areas where you can make changes. Either way, every bit counts (I’m a firm believer in the Margaret Mead quote, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”)
