Exploring the Arctic in July

1

A high of 66° F in July sounds pretty nice, right? Photographer and environmental advocate Sebastian Copeland didn't think so when he and a group of nine young explorers experienced the High Arctic's hottest day on record. The group was part of Pax Arctica's Young Ambassadors of the Arctic, an initiative established by Copeland, Luc Hardy, and Global Green USA to increase public awareness of climate change by getting children involved in critical environmental issues that endanger the Arctic region.

The Pax Arctica team examining a crack at Ward Hunt ice shelfHP is helping sponsor Copeland as part of the company's ongoing efforts to address environmental change in innovative and productive ways. For the first mission, Copeland gathered an international group of young people for a month-long expedition to the Arctic. Their backgrounds are diverse, representing Inuk, France, Germany, Kenya, Italy and the U.S. However, everyone in the group shares a common interest in the environment and a desire to address and raise awareness of climate change. With sponsorship help from HP, the Young Ambassadors of the Arctic set out last July to gather data, experience local culture, raise awareness of global environmental changes and explore the summer ice, which is in jeopardy of disappearing within their lifetimes.

The Young Ambassadors of the Arctic arrived on July 11 to record highs. Then on July 22, the group's observations led to the discovery of a huge chunk of ice that had broken off the Ward Hunt Island main ice shelf, forming two ice islands totaling 20 square kilometers. One young ambassador from France, Flaam, age 16, explained in her blog:

We walked for about 3 or 4 hours in the slushy snow. We stopped for lunch (well, cheese and crackers once again) when we couldn’t go any further: we had reached a huge crack! It was about 100 feet wide. There was also a seal in the water. After lunch we started walking back to camp when we encountered another crack. We took photos with the sponsor flags. At each crack we would take the GPS points and photos to send to the climatologist Derek Mueller.

Part of the young ambassadors' mission is to take what they learned from their time on the ice and educate the public and their individual communities and schools about climate change. To assist in this effort, HP is using the HP Community Wiki to give the young ambassadors an online community to share their experiences. Select ambassadors share expedition blogs, and the expedition has a photo gallery, map and itinerary and more information about the expedition.
