I mentioned that I had done market research at HP. Learning about our customers is critical to many of us inside HP in a number of ways. We need to know if we are making products that will meet your needs. We need to know if you value the features we design. We need to assure ourselves that products will work the way we’ve promised. We need to understand what you would spend for that product or service and how you would like to purchase it, get support from HP, and what you think about your relationship with us.

Most of the research forms the basis of our future product design, our marketing planning and our messaging. We do also learn about customers another way. Observing customers doing everyday printing in their own environment is always of interest to me. Looking at how people network devices, what commands people use and what things people choose to print is interesting; some businesses have things in common while others have created their own processes to manage their work (some do it well, others introduce way too much complexity).

Always on Printing - Small Business Expression CenterWhen I travel, I love to collect “research” too. I always look at what equipment businesses have behind the counter and how much paper is moving around in their office. I’ve had to wait to get checked out of a hotel because the printer needed to warm up to print the bill.

I always check to see what they are using to print- is it a laser printer, an inkjet printer, a dot matrix? If it is a newer HP printer, it has Instant-On Technology, which prints out the first page on almost all black-and-white, HP LaserJets in less than 10 seconds…really it is a feature that provides “no-wait” printing

Have you ever had to wait for something to print? Are there processes in your business that need to occur faster?
