Providing training to South African AIDS Researchers
My 2005 trip was funded by the International Atomic Energy Agency in part because the type of molecular biology involved in these studies uses radionuclides such as 32P and 35S, and in part because the IAEA has several global health programs involving HIV/AIDS.
In 2008, I plan to attend another, similar training workshop in Cape Town; the14th International BioInformatics Workshop on Virus Evolution and Molecular Epidemiology held September 1-5, 2008. I am currently seeking a sponsor to help me with this training mission.

As a genetics and virology researcher, I know how to write grant proposals to the NIH to get funding for research. I have never before attempted to round up $3,500 specifically for one trip to a teaching workshop. I have done many training trips within the USA and Canada, which are covered under the education and outreach part of our HIV Databases grant. However, the cost of this trip is excessive due to the long flight to South Africa, so I need to find a sponsor. The sponsor would get a bit of advertising on the workshop sponsor's page:
http://www.rega.kuleuven.be/cev/workshop/index.php?id=14 I would prefer not to take money from a pharmaceutical company with interests in treating AIDS patients. Not that it would create any conflict of interest on my part, but because I am much more interested in prevention of new infections, through vaccines and behavior changes, than in treating people after they get infected. Anyway, if any of you have ideas, please share them with me.
Do you find this valuable?
