They say, “Good things come to those who wait.” But who wants to wait a long time for pages to print? Like most people, I get impatient waiting for my print job to finish -- especially when I’m on a deadline. It turns out the small business owners in our Challenge feel the same way.

This week the Officejet Pro Challenge participants talked about their experiences with print speed, whether the new Officejet is faster than their old printer, and how that affects their business.

As an HP employee involved with launching these printers, I can tell you the HP Officejet 8500 Wireless was designed like a sports car to deliver the fastest speeds among our business inkjet printers, while delivering professional quality color or black pages. The Officejet Pro is a zippy choice with equivalent color print speeds to lasers – or even faster. In normal default mode, this Officejet Pro prints professional-quality output at up to 15 pages per minute black or up to 11 ppm color. (For details, see www.hp.com/go/inkjetprinter.) In comparison, the Samsung CLX-3175FN and CLX-2160N laser devices, print color much slower rate, at up to 4 ppm in normal mode.

No fuser, no problem! If you’re impatient like me, you’ll be pleased this Officejet Pro can deliver the first-page-out as quickly as 15 seconds for black or color. Typical non-HP laser printers require a warm-up period to heat the fuser – taking extra time before they start printing. I’m psyched that the 5 businesses taking part in the Officejet Pro Challenge are finding this All-in-One to be so useful. As an HP employee who works with the Officejet line, I wanted to share some detailed product info and links you may find useful for your business.

One of the big advantages of the HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-in-One is its ink system design. Because it uses individual ink cartridges for each color of ink, you only need to replace the cartridge that runs out. For some other printers that combine 3 or 5 colors into one cartridge system, you may have to throw away some good ink (and $) just because one color ran out. Not so with Officejet Pro.

Here’s another way Officejet Pro can save your business some bucks and some time. The Officejet 940XL cartridges are high-capacity ink cartridges that print more pages than standard cartridges before needing replacement. Several of the Officejet Pro Challenge participants mentioned how much they like the built-in, automatic double-sided printing on Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless AiO. It’s an easy way to reduce paper usage and reduce environmental impact – not to mention the potential to save you up to 50% off paper costs. The double-sided output works for faxes and copies too, and the 50-page automatic document feeder also supports double-sided originals for scanning and copying. This can be a time-saver since you can load documents and walk away.

I’m Bret Bottger, an HP employee who works with Officejet Pro product line (I also contribute to the HP Inkjet Printing Blog at www.communities.hp.com/online/blogs/inkjet/default.aspx) I wanted to share some info and tips you might find helpful for managing your small business.

It’s really rewarding to see that the setup went well for our Challenge participants. Making it easy to get connected was a design goal for the Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless. That’s why it offers Wi-Fi 802.11g, wired Ethernet and USB 2.0 connection options. I’ve found that people who use the wireless connection really appreciate the flexibility of being able to take their laptop away from the desk and print wirelessly from virtually any location in their office.

Kudos to OVI, Pat’s Hair Salon and BID Blinds for putting printouts through the water torture test. I’m glad to see there were no problems with ink running when the paper got wet. This is a key benefit we focused on when creating these new inks. Since they are pigment-based, these Officejet 940 inks produce professional color pages that are archive-quality, quick-drying and water resistant. (By the way, when I demonstrate this feature to customers, I like to take a freshly printed page and dip it into a big bowl of water to show how the ink stays on the page. I’ve also splashed water on the printed pages from a bottle, but I don’t recommend trying that at home since it creates a puddle on the floor.)

I know you are getting tired of hearing about blogs as marketing tools, but they are still one of the best return on investments for a small business.

Here’s why:
1) It makes it very easy to update your web presence - easy is good because easy gets done
2) Locally you can use a blog to gain exposure that your competition can’t
3) Search engines love blogs (still) and will reward you with better search results when your prospects go looking
4) The daily and weekly chore (that may be how you initially view it) of producing written content will make you a much better communicator, marketer and salesperson - it’s the killer activity

A demand for relevancy is driving the news industry to the brink. The average age of the people watching the daily, evening news is dwindling.

In the end, it is all about making the connection — as genuinely as possible.
