I was assembling a presentation my boss will give this week to our partner community. These are the businesses that help you make decisions on what technology and how to service small/medium company's IT needs.
The presentation focused on helping the partner companies be focused on smart things they can do to weather the recession and be ready for better economic times.
One of the best pieces of advice is to spend more on advertising/marketing of your brand. In tough times, most companies cut back on this level of spend; smart companies will figure out how to gain share and drive more valuable connections, messages and customer acquisition strategies.
Keep this one top of mind when the right opportunities to connect and interconnect your business present themselves.

I received a message today from someone looking for money inside this wiki as a random request. I found strange and humorous. What has the internet evolved to?

OK...whoever invents the 1st universal password with ultimate security for online experiences...really wins. I would be delighted if it was someone inside our own SMB wiki community here for HP. I am just noticing it has been well over a month before I finally came back...after several times trying to reset my password and remember my log in name. UGH. I am so pleased with our new site, its new content direction, its aggregated contributors and of course, new members who keep joining. Tell us what you need via Angela or Kate (or Anneliese and myself). Thanks for being an HP customer!

I read an article in Pink Magazine online (a new women's business magazine) about Kiva.org's co-founder, Jessica Flannery. As a small non-profit (like small business) she was inspired by Nobel Prize Winner who spoke at a her University to start Kiva. They have raised $23 million online to date and given 250,000 micro loans to businesses in over 40 countries. 2/3 of Kiva's borrowers are women! This kind of smart, inspirational business is something we should all learn from.

I am the daughter of a Kennedy Democrat. In memory of My Dad, James F. Agen, I need to post this very moving op-ed piece by Caroline Kennedy.
As a small business owner, recognize the importance of you as a business of the U.S. and a citizen. At HP, the founders, Bill and Dave, were very vocal about changing the world through their political, community and environmental involvement.

It has been too long since I contributed. I have so many thoughts to share. In HP, our new fiscal year starts Nov 1, and it seems like we have spent so much time figuring out what customers like you want from us...printing, pc, and experience related. We have shared lots of content with you...please join and let us know what you want from HP. This is a great community to start connecting to HP, especially imaging and printing.

I would highly recommend you find the time, in between all you do as a small business person, to read: "A Whole New Mind" by Daniel H. Pink. Net/net, he discusses the reasons why 'right brainers" will rule the future and the importance. Accoding to Pink, as we enter the "Age of Abundance" from the "Information Age", we need to have 6 new senses: Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play and Meaning!!! Enjoy this book!

I write this with knowledge of many HP colleagues who have gone through so much this week. We have a big part of our business operation in San Diego and I know that some of my co-workers have lost their homes. I create this comment and entry to really think about 2 important issues. 1. What can HP and what can we all do to help Small Businesses that will have to recover, rebuild and reenergize? 2. How can businesses and home owners build more environmentally and 'green?" What wil you do to help. Through HP, I am able to donate to my coworkers. In addition, I have 2 good firends that we are the run and shut down both their business doors (physically) and homes. My one friend was the only home on her block that survived the fire (she claims she had her brush and vegetation cut back this summer). I will be helping both of these friends in any way I can, too.

This week, we invited Andy Sernovitz, an expert in Word of Mouth Marketing, to come to HP and share his thoughts on how to help companies be great around this marketing strategy, especially online. He had 2 ideas I loved most and want to share. 1. Use "Love" in your next meeting about something you want to do for your customers, your suppliers, your employees or yourself as it relates to your brand. It reminded me of a website: www.lovemarks.com. Kevin Roberts, CEO of a big ad agency conglomerate, Saatchi & Saatchi, wrote both the books and turned his thoughts into a movement. 2. You can get more of Andy's advice at: http://www.womma.org. One great idea from him: add a "tell a friend" button to your website, on all its pages, in order to get and produce more buzz for your business!

September 26th - Is PR a Good Strategy for Small Businesses?

I loved this article from chief marketer.com.
Here is the link: http://chiefmarketer.com/disciplines/publicrelations/small_business_pr_09232007/
Here is an excerpt from the article by Karla Jo: Helms
"Can Small Businesses Benefit From PR?
Size really doesn't matter when it comes to public relations. Any size company can benefit from publicity, but the practice is commonly misunderstood in the business arena. Most entrepreneurs think of it as something that only large corporations have a budget for..
According to Friedman, print is where one will find a huge segment of one's buying audience. With over 137 million Americans regularly reading a daily newspaper and more than 31,000 publications ranging from antiques to zoology, print media holds mass appeal as a key source of entertainment and information.
There are several ways to approach the print medium, says Friedman.
1) Write a "tips" or "how to" article. This is one of the best ways to get free publicity in newspapers and magazines. Offer lots of valuable advice and make sure it's written well enough for a publication to run it without having to heavily edit. Be sure to include your credentials and other boastful information to support your position as an expert -- but be careful not to make the article a promotional piece. Editors are looking for content that will be informative to their readers, not a brag piece about you or your company.
2) Write an "opinion letter.
3) Create photo opportunities. Local newspapers are always looking for interesting photos and images.
4) Recycle your print coverage. Turn one media hit into multiple hits by sending a reprint of a weekly newspaper story about you or your company to an editor at a daily newspaper, along with a pitch letter offering a different angle. "
GO to the link! Start your PR plan now!!!

I was able to attend a Thought Leadership Conference last week for HP. There were a number of companies there, both presenting and attending. The theme was how the customer experience for companies is changing. As you can imagine, a few presenters, like EA and Google, really showed an amazing amount of change due to the changes their customer experiences are presenting with communities and user generated content online. At EA, they have a "Community Management Team." I just love that group name. I do think that every copmany needs to have this function. If your business still looks like a business card online, then you really need to explore how to incorporate more changes, from the web 2.0 world, to your online experience. Review these great sets of articles on Busienssweek online: http://www.businessweek.com/smallbiz/special_reports/20070910doingbusine.htm?link_position=link1

I am looking to connect with HP imaging and printing customers that need more advice, direction, information, and anything that might keep them up at night about brand identity, small business financing, marketing as a small business, creating demand, etc.! I will also create entries that help you think differently about the items above! Reach out anytime! Taraprintingplus!
