I am an HIV researcher, primarily focussed on epidemiology and vaccine design. I have been interested in biology forever, and got interested in molecular genetics in the early 1980s, when cloning genes and sequencing DNA became routine. Although I work in a "high tech" area of HIV/AIDS research, we all realize that until a safe, effective and affordable vaccine can be delivered to the world, accurate information on how HIV is and is not spread, is our best weapon in fighting this pandemic. We need to encourage HIV testing, and reduce stigma. People should not be afraid of HIV or HIV-infected people, they just need the knowledge to understand it. Out side of work, I love my family, and we do a lot of skiing, boating, camping, and travelling.
